What is the problem?
Neighbors Med exists because the current healthcare delivery system is broken. In a healthcare system that is based on 3rd party payers (insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare), it has become very complicated for both patients and physicians to navigate the system. There are several major issues that have evolved in this system. One is a breakdown in genuine physician-patient relationships as 3rd party payers determine the way care is delivered. In-network or Out-of-network status, prior authorizations, and coding structures all create barriers between patients and physicians. Further, there is a loss in transparency in the cost of medical care. Consider this, where else in our culture do we access goods or services without the knowledge of the cost and then just accept the bill without question? However, that is our current healthcare delivery system operates. As increasingly more layers are added to the complex healthcare system, the cost of delivering healthcare rises. Not only are costs actually increased by adding these layers, but then they are artificially inflated and subsequently “discounted” by insurance contracts with physicians or healthcare systems. Because neither the physician nor the patient has access to the price of healthcare at the time it is delivered, the cost of services and treatments does not enter in the decision making process. Often, the end product is a confusion of costly services, physicians distracted by the system and disconnected from patients, and patients that feel like a case number rather than a uniquely valued person.

We are convinced there is a better way to deliver healthcare! As we look forward to the future of healthcare, we believe that there are lessons to be learned from the past. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that health insurance became central to the healthcare industry. Prior to this, patients made decisions with their doctors and they paid their doctors. Healthcare was personal.
At Neighbors Med we are going back to the future! Using a direct primary care model, we believe we can offer modern medicine with traditional care. We operate outside the traditional 3rd party (insurance) paying system. Namely, we do not accept or bill insurance—at all. We operate directly with our patients. We depend on you to determine whether you are getting quality healthcare—not a metric that an insurance executive decides is an effective was to evaluate care. So, we are offering modern medicine, using the latest technology, with traditional care which allows us to have genuine relationships with our patients in a delivery system that is cost-transparent and cost-effective.
